Attention New Mums Healthy Weight Loss After Baby

For a new Mum healthy weight loss after a baby is essential, especially if you’re breast feeding. However to some people the term healthy weight loss may seem a little redundant because isn’t weight loss, by definition, healthy! After all, many of us need to lose weight in order to get ourselves down to a healthy body weight, and the sooner, the better.

While this may seem to be true, the fact is that losing excess body weight too quickly can be unhealthy and actually downright dangerous. Losing weight too quickly probably means that you are losing lots of water and this can lead to dehydration, it will also drain your energy levels and leave you fatigued and unmotivated as if having a baby wasn’t tiring enough.  In order to maintain a healthy weight loss program after having a baby, follow some of the tips below.

The Start and Finish

To lose weight safely means choosing healthy, low fat meals and snacks, drinking lots of water and exercising regularly. Always eat your salad first. This habit alone will help you to lose weight as it reduces hunger, adds water rich foods to your diet and gives you the much needed and recommended fruit and vegetable portions. All of which is fantastic for your new born baby. Finish off meals with a piece of fruit where possible. This will add fibre, vitamins and minerals to your diet as well as satisfy that sweet habit that you have probably gotten into. Whatever you do, do not starve yourself…your body needs food as fuel.

When and How Much To Eat

Eat more often again (especially if you are breastfeeding). Eating more often throughout the day, but in smaller portions will keep your energy levels up and your body’s metabolism burning strong. With the steady stream of energy, your body will release less insulin. Insulin release is related to weight gain and diabetes. Smaller meals will also reduce hunger. When you are eating meals, choose smaller portions.  We tend to eat more than we need to. Choose a smaller plate size and eat your food slowly, this will give your body a chance to tell you that it is full before you continue filling it up.

Eat At Home: We all love restaurants, but they are a killer on any weight loss program. It is difficult to lose weight when there are so many tempting items on the menu.  Not to mention portion sizes!   If you absolutely can’t eat at home due to work or some other situation, plan in advance to bring a healthy lunch from home to keep you away from those expensive, and calorie laden lunches!

Healthy weight loss after having a baby is possible if you take the right measures, have support behind you and a determination to get healthy.
