How To Cloth Diaper Your Baby At Night

Talk to any cloth diapering mom and they all agree that the biggest obstacle is how to cloth diaper at night and not wake up in a puddle of pee. Yes, it’s going to take some trial and error. But it doesn’t mean you have to resort to using disposable diapers.

Disposable diapers leak, bulge, excrete crystals, transfer dioxins and don’t allow the skin to breathe. They are not the “easy answer”. When you chose to cloth diaper you had a reason that overcame the convenience of any throw away comsumer product. Whether it is financial, environmental or health reasons that brought you to use cloth diapers, they are all still valid when the sun goes down.

That being said, cloth diapering at night is all the more satisfying when you find the solution that works for your baby. Aside from the type of diaper that you gently place on your baby before they drift off to sleep there are another tip that is helpful. Limiting or eliminating the fluids at bedtime and the middle of the night reduces the amount of outflow during the night. However, even if your baby is a constant nighttime feeder, you can STILL cloth diaper at night.

There is not one nighttime system that works for all babies but there are a few shining stars.

Prefolds as pocket stuffers: Prefolds are highly absorbent and are perfect for trifolding and inserting into a pocket. A prefold can be wrapped around a doubler, like the Joeybunz hemp insert or Happy Heinys Stuffin Insert, or two prefolds can be wrapped together. You can use any pocket diaper, however many moms have had great success with Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius diapers at night. There are a couple of top performing one-size diapers on the market as well that have caught the eye of quite a few cloth diapering families.

Fitted Diapers: Baby Beehind (BBH), Very Baby Simply Nights (VBSN), and Bamboo Velour Goodmama top the list of most highly recommended fitteds for use at night. Fitted Diapers are a great nighttime option because of their absorbent materials, the ability to add doublers, and their breathability. Successful nighttime fitteds usually contain hemp and/or velour for their ability to soak up large amounts of liquid. These fitteds allow you to lay a doubler under the snap insert and still have the soft material touching your baby’s skin. Where as pocket diapers contain a water-proof layer of PUL (polyurethane laminate), fitted diapers do not have this and require a cover. The lack of PUL is what allows a fitted diaper to “breathe”. To breathe means air is allowed to circulate to baby’s skin. A fitted diaper, though, is only as good as the cover you choose…

Wool: The brightest star in the sky when it comes to having dry sheets is WOOL. Wool is very breathable, comfortable, and can absorb 30x it’s weight in moisture before feeling damp to the touch. Wool keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I live in the hot state of Texas and wool worked wonderfully last summer. Wool is also anti-bacterial because of the properties of lanolin. Lanolin contains acidic fatty acids that react with the basic urea to create salt and water. Urea is a component of urine that would normally cause odors. Wool will need to be washed and re-lanolized every couple of weeks. It is a great idea to put a wool soaker or wool longies over any nighttime system you choose for that extra protection. You can choice hand knit wool, crocheted wool, recycled wool sweaters, or interlock wool for your nighttime safety net.

Getting enough sleep at night is enough to worry about. Don’t add to it by also worrying about wet sheets. You may have to experiment with a couple of different diapers before you find what works for your baby, but it will be well worth the effort!

Things to Do in Preparation for Baby’s Birth

Finding out that you’re pregnant can be very exciting, especially for those that have been trying for some time. You’ll find yourself dreaming of the features that come through in your child. Who will they look more like? What is the gender of the child? How will you make him/her most comfortable and safe when you bring him/her home?  The arrival of your child opens a new page in the book of your life. All the excitement and emotions can get overwhelming at times. In order to help keep your emotions in check and give you one less thing to worry about, it’s important to know how to prepare for you baby’s arrival.

Read up on everything while you can. Once your baby comes you will have precious few opportunities to sit down and read about parenting. Make that something you do ahead of time. There are a lot of books out there that focus on parenting from first time parents to parents in their later years. When you take the time to read about everything that is happening to your body as well as the reasoning for the tests that you’ll be taking throughout your pregnancy, you won’t be as worried every time something changes or you feel something different inside.

Take it easy, but don’t forget exercise. In your pregnancy you obviously won’t want to run a marathon, but getting some exercise regularly will keep you healthy no matter how much weight you put on. Remember, you’re not dieting. It’s not good for baby to diet during the pregnancy due to the artificial sweeteners and low fat foods. Your baby needs the fat to grow. However, getting regular exercise will help you have easier labor and will keep your body in shape under the child growing.

When registering for your baby shower ask others that already have children. There are lots of “things” out there for babies. If you talk to someone that’s recently had a child of their own, they’ll be able to tell you the items you won’t want to be without and the ones that are not so great. Additionally, if you ask your guests to bring one package of diapers each and play a game with them such as the person with the heaviest package wins a prize or something along those lines, you may not have to buy diapers for quite some time.

Prepare your child’s bedroom and pack your bag. Many women will carry their baby to full term, go in to labor, and deliver their child with very few problems. But some women will go into labor suddenly or early. It’ll be easier on your nerves as you come closer to the end of your pregnancy to know that when the time comes, all you have to do is go the hospital. Even if you don’t know what you’re having, if the bedroom is prepared, you know that everything will be ready when you come home from the hospital.

These tips will help you prepare for the arrival of your baby. You’ll be able to rest your mind as you come close to those last few weeks before delivery because everything will be done. Having a rested mind will help you through labor and delivery because you’ll know you’ve done everything to prepare.

Unusual Baby Names

Parents, increasingly, are thinking up unique names for their children. An exotic association apart, there is at least one constructive advantage to this. An unusual name helps to confer exclusivity, helping the owner to stand out and be recognized more easily. Think about how easy it is to remember a ‘Terranova’ from a crowd of Marys and Janes.

However, choosing an unusual baby name requires some care. How can you choose a name that is distinctive, yet does not end up sounding ridiculous? Of course, you don’t want your child to be at the receiving end of all the Waynes and Dylans in his school. Here are a few tips:

1. Check what’s out there. Start by looking up popular baby names listed in parenting books and websites. Along with the more familiar ones, you will also find some unusual baby names that you have rarely heard before, and that will catch your fancy.

2. Old is gold. Many old names that were quite popular until recently have now fallen out of favor. Research names in historical archives or literature, or dig up some of the unusual names from your own family records.

3. Read the glossies. Celebrity baby names are another good source for distinctive names. The advantage here will be that though the name will be unusual, it will have built up some level of familiarity and acceptability because of the media coverage. The disadvantage, of course, will be that the name may end up becoming too popular, thereby losing its novelty factor.

4. Get the spelling right. Be careful about using an unusual baby name that is simply a popular name cached in a new spelling-such as ‘Jaysonne’ or ‘Jayesun.’ This will of course sound phony, considering that the pronunciation will remain plain old ‘Jason.’ More importantly, your child may even have to face ridicule from others on this account.

5. Avoid strange combinations. Also, resist the temptation to create an unusual baby name by stringing together two or more names, such as ‘Branjelina’. Unless done sensibly, such a name will probably sound outlandish or gawky.

How to Plan a Long Distance Baby Shower Event

Are you planning a long-distance baby shower for a loved one or a close friend who has moved away? If so, read on… because these words were written just for you!

Long-distance baby showers are becoming increasingly popular and much more fun and easier to put together. Not too long ago, a box of gifts shipped across the country was considered the typical long distance shower. When received, Mom-to-be would open the box, filled with smaller boxes and cards and call it a celebration. It’s not that this gesture wasn’t appreciated; it just wasn’t much of a celebration.

With the help of the Internet, planning a fun filled long-distance baby shower is easier than you might think. The majority of the arrangements can be made from the comfort of your home, on the internet and the event can be much more in a single box of baby gifts.

If the guest of honor is the only attendee now living in the area, you can plan a traditional shower and videotape the entire event. This way friends and family and get together and enjoy the day, while celebrating the occasion. You can upload the video on YouTube and each guest can record a memorable keepsake for the new mom filled with good wishes, advice and whatever else they want to tell her. You can send out invitation, play games, serve food, ect… just as you would if Mom was there.

You might even decide to ask the guests, to bring their gifts unwrapped. That way you could incorporate gift wrapping into the shower, as part of the presentation.

Since Mom won’t be there, you might want to incorporate the following into the festivities. Either ask each guest to tell a funny story about her or how they met her… or both.

When it comes time to ship the package, there are several things you will want to include besides the gifts. (Keep in mind this is not a comprehensive list. Feel free to add other items, to the box, if they will add to the fun.)

Items to add can include: an invitation, confetti, helium filled balloons (if you have a really big box), recipes for all of the munchies that were served in the shower (or the actual munchies themselves if they will ship well). And of course, last but not least, the videotape or DVD of the shower itself.

As the hostess of the shower you might suggest to guests that smaller gifts and/or gift cards are much easier to ship. The majority of them will probably agree and decide to opt for something other than a car seat or crib.

You can also gave each guest the option of ordering gifts online and shipping them themselves. Although this particular shipping method is probably best for guests who live out of town.

Following these simple tips will make it much easier when you are planning a long-distance baby shower. With a bit of planning they can be just as enjoyable as a traditional shower.

Can You Choose the Sex of Your Baby

In today’s world, we want what we want and we want it when we want it and in many areas of life we can get it.  Can the same principles apply to choosing the gender of our children? Should they?

Some want a baby boy first and then a baby girl.  Some parents envision their perfect family of two of each.  Without dealing with petrie dishes and technicians, can you make the determination of the sex of your baby on your own? Some say that you can.

There are a lot of reasons why people might believe that beyond idealism they just really want a baby boy or baby girl next.  Most often this occurs when a family has a large brood of children all in the same gender and the family wants one more child to complete the family. In some cultures it also occurs because of population control. For centuries people have been trying to use various methods to increase the possibilities of having a specific gendered baby.

Gender Selection Seminars and Books

There are seminars people attend to learn to determine the sex of  their next baby. There are also hardcover, paperback and electronic books available to help you make lifestyle choices that can definitely sway the odds in the favour of a boy baby or a girl baby.

Some experts suggest that the following can have an impact on whether you get the x’s and y’s or just the x’s in terms of chromosomes in male sperm.

-intercourse position

-diet of male and female prior to conception

-vitamin and supplement use

-time of sex during the woman’s monthly cycle

-body’s pH level

-presence or absence of orgasm in males and / or females

-Increasing fertility in males and females

Regardless of what your reasons are in wanting a boy or wanting a baby girl, getting educated about prenatal care and learning about effective help for trying to conceive can only empower you to have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Psychologically, it can be frustrating if you are hoping for a boy and get a girl and vice versa but more than the vast majority are happy with whatever the results are.  It doesn’t hurt to learn how to possibly tip the scales in favour of your ideal choice though.

    Babies Bathing

Bath time is a special time of bonding with a baby and her parents. It’s a time to play gently, talk and sing.  Get everything you will need ready before you start! The list includes water (of course), washcloth, alcohol pads, bath towel (with hood if you have one), clean diaper, any items you routinely use during a diaper change (for little circumcised boys this would include Vaseline and gauze squares), and fresh clothes.

Use a special baby wash and baby shampoo, preferably natural ones with calendula oils; regular soaps and shampoos can be too harsh or drying.  Babies lose body heat very quickly, so make sure the room is warm — 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal.

Gently cradle your baby’s head in one hand and use the other hand to remove her clothing. Gently wash her with a soft, warm washcloth, and dry her off with a towel. If you like, you can wash one area at a time and put a fresh item of clothing on as soon as an area is washed and dried. This is not necessary unless you are in a chilly room.

It’s a good idea to start with the “less dirty” areas first, i.e. leave the diaper area until last, so you’re not washing the baby in dirty water. As you go, be sure to gently wash behind her ears; the crevices in her neck, elbows, and knees; and in between her fingers and toes.   It’s a good idea to wash a newborn’s hair near the end of bath time.

This will help prevent him or her from losing too much body heat. Most newborns don’t have much hair, so it is easy to sponge it with water much the same way you do the rest of the body. Almost all babies dislike getting their eyes wet. If you tip the head back just a bit and work your way from the front to the back, you can avoid getting water in your baby’s eyes.

How to Get Pregnant 10 Tips to Help Get Pregnant

      Copyright (c) 2008 Hope Pope

The best way to get pregnant is to live a healthy lifestyle and get your body as healthy as possible. If you are shaking your head and thinking, “I already do that”, after reading these top 10 tips to get pregnant, you might realize, you aren’t as healthy as you could be. And maybe by implementing all of these tips into your lifestyle, better things will happen.

      1. Stop eating foods with MSG in it. MSG has been linked to infertility. Make sure to read the labels on the back of foods. MSG is not just in most Chinese foods anymore. It is in a lot of foods now. As an added note, any kind of preservative is not good for you. When you can, eat foods without preservatives.

      2. Don’t eat pesticides. It sounds obvious but a lot of people don’t wash their fruits and vegetables well. Buy a veggie wash. You can typically get it at Walmart or your local health store. Some supermarkets even sell it now. Remember, eating fruits and veggies is an excellent way to get a lot of needed vitamins and minerals but not if they are loaded with pesticides. Another option… a much better one… is to buy organic fruits and vegetables from your local health store. It is expensive but worth it.

      3. Drink fresh vegetable juices such as carrot juice as much as possible. Vegetable juices are loaded with antioxidants… and studies have shown that an increase in antioxidants increases the sperm in men… and therefore increases the the chance of becoming pregnant. True story… there was a man who was told all of his sperm cells were killed years ago because of a bad bout with lyme’s disease as well as other infections he had in his lifetime. He and his wife tried to have a baby for about 15 years but it appeared hopeless. Then he started drinking a lot of carrot juice daily (fresh carrot juice) and after about 8 months, he became fertile again… and had a beautiful healthy baby girl. As an added note… this man was 46 years old when he had a baby.

      4. Make sure the man eats lots of tomato soup. A study done in August of 2007 showed that men who ate just one bowl of tomato soup a day boosted their fertility rate by 7 to 12%.

      5. Do not drink tap water… and try not to cook with it as well. Use distilled water to cook. Most of the time, tap water is filled with fluoride which has been linked to lower fertility rates as well as lower sperm counts.

      6. Eat as many green vegetables as possible. Everyone knows that folic acid is so important for pregnancy… so eat as much broccoli, spinach and asparagus as possible.

      7. Steam your vegetables versus cooking them on the stove, grilling them or microwaving them. Steaming vegetables versus cooking them is a much better option since much more nutrients are kept intact when steaming. You can buy a steamer at Walmart or any Department store. Nowadays, you can buy steamers that will cook the whole meal for you… as some of them have 3 sections… and you can put your chicken in one area (set it for one temperature) and your vegetables in another area (and set them for a different temperature). They’re great because you can just set the timer… and walk away until the meal is done.

      8. Stop smoking if you do. Studies show that you decrease your chance of getting pregnant by 50% if you smoke.

      9. Lose weight if you are overweight. Again, studies show that overweight woman have a harder time conceiving.

      10. Stop drinking alcohol. Studies show that getting pregnant is harder if you drink while pregnant.

How to Pick a Baby Name at Baby Names World

Choosing the right name for your Baby is a difficult task. The name you pick will be with your child forever, so it’s important to take the time to make a good selection. In America the choices are almost endless; this can be overwhelming for parents. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

      Sound

How does your baby’s name sound when spoken aloud? Is it harsh, or soft? Does it fit well with your last name? In most cases, shorter names sound good with long last names, and vice versa. Avoid placing a first name that ends in a vowel with a last name that starts with a vowel – the names can be awkward to pronounce. Stay away from names that rhyme if you don’t want your child to be teased or have silly nicknames bestowed upon him or her unwillingly.

      Uniqueness

A less common name can have advantages. For instance, if you name your son “Michael,” there’s a high chance he’ll have several classmates with the same name during his school years. At the same time, a rare name that is hard to pronounce – or just plain weird – may cause your child to be teased or attract too much attention.

      Relatives

It’s still quite common for parents to take the opinions of family and friends into consideration when selecting a baby name. Some parents choose to name their baby after a parent, grandparent, or close friend. Allow the loved ones in your life to offer suggestions, but don’t tell anyone the chosen name of the baby until after the child is born. This will make it easier to avoid pressure from relatives that may cause you to choose a name you don’t like.

Baby Names World offers a comprehensive list of baby name suggestions to help you narrow down the choices without feeling overwhelmed. Sort baby names by gender, alphabet, origin, category, and popularity. You can also use the site’s handy search engine to do a quick or advanced search.
