Bali Travel Guide and Review Part 2

Balinese Castes
The Balinese Hindu religion regards a traditional caste system though it has never been as divisive as its Indian ascendent. This is for the most part due to the fact that over 90% of Balinese belong to the lowest ‘Sudra’ caste, and in India would have been considered ‘untouchable’. Given their dominance such mental attitudes in Bali would not be realistic. Notwithstanding these facts, inter-marriage persists to be uncommon and discouraged.
The three upper castes are together recognized as the ‘Triwangsa’ (’three peoples’) constituting Brahmana, Kesayatria and Wesia. Caste is specified by birth but is rarely reflected in a person’s occupation, although only a Brahmana can be suited to be a Pedanda high priest, and only Brahmana may take the task of recreating masks from the ‘Barong’ dance as they harbour the ability to protect themselves from the evil spirits.
Balinese Names
Upon learning a Balinese friends name, you can establish some elements of his or her background. First Of All, the name will often indicate the cast to which they belong. For illustration, if you meet someone named Ida Bagus, you recognize they belong to the highest Brahmana caste or, if they are addressed as Gusti, they will almost surely belong to the Wesia caste. The Balinese also distinguish their children in order of birth. Together with a personal name, unique in the family, a Balinese child will be awarded a more common name. The firstborn is often Wayan or Putu while the second born generally carries the name of Made or Kadek. The third child usually is Nyoman or Komang and the fourth is always Ketut; with the birth of a fifth child, the naming cycle starts again.
Children
The Balinese dote on their children, a devotion that no doubt leads to the calm and relaxed demeanour of the island’s population. At birth the baby’s umbilical cord is buried with oblations to protect them throughout their lives. Until the child reaches three months of age, they are permanently carried as it is regarded as unclean and disrespectful if they should touch the ground before that age. Balinese children are discouraged from crawling, believed to be only the actions of an animal, and learn to walk at a very young age. Upon reaching 105 days, the baby will be ornamented with bracelets and anklets. A further 105 days later, a ceremony is held to signify their entry into adulthood. The passage through puberty is celebrated with a tooth filing ceremony, aimed to flatten any pointed teeth that may represent evil and designed to restrict sinful emotions and actions such as greed, anger, jealousy, stupidity, and adultery.
Everyday, there are many temple ceremonies all over Bali. Some are held at a single village temple while others are island-wide. One common ceremony is the ‘odelan’, held every 210 days to celebrate a temple’s anniversary. Another is held every time there is a full moon. The day of Saraswati heralds a ceremony celebrating knowledge, learning and the arts. Ceremonies on this day are held in relation to schools and primarily involve students. Some important days occur very rarely such as the ‘Eka Dasa Rudra’, held only once every 100 years at Besakih Temple. .
Religion
Bali is a predominantly Hindu Island, surviving in an Islamic nation. Minority populations of Muslims, Christians and Buddhists are also found on the island.
Little is known of the introduction of Hinduism in Bali though it doubtlessly involved the Indian traders who came to these parts for the spice trade over two thousand years ago. Given its physical isolation from the ancestral religion, Balinese Hinduism has since developed into a unique version of the ancient faith. Although the fundamentals remain the same, many of the gods revered on Bali are unknown in India and vice versa. Vast Hindu kingdoms were also found in neighbouring islands but they disappeared soon after the Arabs became interested in the archipelago, bringing with them Islam to Indonesia’s shores. Bali held little interest for the Arab traders so it was largely left alone. Throughout Indonesia, traditional beliefs in mysticism and the spiritual world remain strong, despite the common practice of imported faiths that forbid such strong beliefs.
While the impact this has had on the Islamic faith is often controversial, for the Balinese, the two have merely blend to create the distinctive religion they follow today.

Baby Car Seats – Which One Does Your Child Need

Baby car seats are very important to the safety of your child while he/she is travelling in a vehicle. All newer car seats meet all the safety regulations that have been established nationally. The correct installation and the correct seat can be the difference between injury and no injury should you become involved in a crash. Many fire departments and police departments offer clinics to teach you how to correctly install your seats and to ensure that they are correctly installed. All types of car seats should be installed in the backseat. The front seat is deadly if your car has a passenger airbag. There are several types of car seats available – infant car seats, convertible car seats, forward facing toddler seats, and booster seats.
Infant car seats are seats that are designed for infants usually from 5 pounds up to between 22 and 30 pounds (depending on the model). These seats should always be rear facing as this is the safest position for your baby. Many infant car seats have bases that latch into the vehicle which allows the actual seat to act as a carrier and to snap in and out of the base. This will keep you from having to “install” the seat every time you get into the vehicle. Your infant should remain in the rear facing position until he/she is one year old and 20 pounds. Both criteria should be met before placing your child in a forward facing seat.
Convertible car seats are car seats that work in both the rear facing and forward facing positions. This type of car seat is installed in the vehicle in a rear facing position fully reclined until the baby reaches one year and 20 pounds. At that time, the car seat can be turned around and installed in a forward facing position. These car seats have a five point harness (or a T-shield or a tray shield) and can be used for children up to age 4 and 40 pounds (some models allow for a heavier 4 year old and go up to 80 pounds). Many models offer the ability to remove the 5 point harness and install the seat as a belt positioning booster seat.
A forward facing toddler seat is a car seat that is designed for children age 1 to age 4 ranging in weight from 20 pounds to 40 pounds or more depending on the model. This is the next step in car seats after the infant car seat. Many of these types of seats also convert into a booster seat.
Booster seats are designed to ensure the seatbelts in your vehicle fit your child. The seats are for children from age 4 and 40 pounds. There are high back and backless styles available. Any toddler or convertible car seat is going to convert to a high back. A backless style sits in the seat under the child and raises the child to the appropriate height for the belt. It is imperative that your child sits in a baby car seat, make sure you are using the right one.

Environmentally Conscious World Needs More Cloth Baby Diapers

When you really think about, how much waste we produce on a daily basis, it simply is baffling.
We are about to have our second child in the next few weeks and one of the on-going costs with having babies are diapers. Every week, I must throw out at anywhere between forty to fifty diapers in the garbage that end up in the local landfill. That’s just me, can you image how many diapers are being thrown out on a weekly basis by parents in your city.
Growing up, I remember parents using cloth diapers for newborn babies. Yes it was a bit more work, but they were recyclable, environmentally friendly and you always had some on hand. So it was a great surprise when my wife approached me one day to say she is contemplating using cloth diapers for our second child. This was a surprise, but when she outlined the benefits, it was then that I realized this was an excellent choice.
For some reason I never really thought she would want to go this route with the new baby coming. On top of producing less waste, we ran some calculations and figured out the savings to be had over a course of a year. It did not stop there, we started calculating for two years and the price was astonishing.
What about all the extra work?
Turns out these new cloth diapers were more technologically advanced with features like double or triple layers of cloth to prevent leakage. In the old days they used to use large safety pins, where now cloth diapers use velcro for fastening. And the washing part can be outsourced to a weekly diaper service which are popping up all over the place.Yes the disposable diapers are convenient, great for traveling, required by some day cares and take less time to work with, but when calculating the costs and the tax on the environment, cloth diapers should be considered as an option.
These days, cloth diapers are made from various materials and have a variety of features. They’re not the standard white color anymore, you’ll find designers getting in to the action by creating unique prints and patterns making them even more attractive.
It is worth taking a second look at the cloth vs disposable diaper dilemma and consider the re-birth of the cloth baby diapers market. Take it to consideration the environmental and cost factor, you may be surprised at the savings this solution may provide for you, your new baby and your household budget.

How to Keep Your Baby Safe in the City

One of your main concerns as a parent raising a baby in the city is your baby’s safety. The city does a wonderful job of offering a wide spectrum of culture and experience that cannot be found anywhere else. However, with that wonderful experience comes a host of possible dangers. This is not meant to scare anyone away from the joys of city living, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Health hazards, transportation and public playgrounds present possible dangers that should be guarded against.
With such a large population, it’s no wonder that health hazards exist. Two big ones that affect your little city dweller are ozone and pollution. To protect your family from ozone, watch the news for ozone warnings. Usually, the danger time is from 1 to 5 p.m. so keep outside playtime in the morning and evening. Also watch for air pollution warnings and avoid outside play during danger times. You must also keep watch on the indoor air pollution. Try to keep the apartment ventilated and clean any window A/C units. Don’t smoke, and if your child has allergies, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. If you live in a building or home constructed before 1978, keep a lookout for the dangers of lead paint. For all info on lead risks, contact the EPA’s National Lead Information Center (www.epa.gov/lead/nlic.htm) . The last two problems are mold and pests. Mold is best controlled by controlling moisture. If problems do arise, notify your landlord and/or clean it immediately. For more info go to www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/moldguide.html . As for pests, everyone’s familiar with cockroaches, rats and mice. The best prevention for all pests is cleanliness. Clean up any food spills or messes and tightly store all pantry food in sturdy plastic bins.
Large cities have many forms of transportation from mass transit to taxi cabs, and it’s important to keep your baby safe while on the go. One big danger on the subway or bus is the presence of germs. Babies and toddlers love to touch everything, so try to keep them restrained and invest in some hand sanitizer. In case the train or bus makes a sudden stop, make sure your toddler is firmly seated at all times. If no seats are available, hold them as securely as you can, but usually people give up seats if they see you with children. As for taxis, be sure to bring something like a car seat or travel vest to strap in your little one. If you’ve ever ridden in a taxi, you understand how dangerous it can be for an infant or toddler. Also beware of intersections while walking as they are the most common place for tragic accidents.
As for playgrounds, also make an effort to inspect the equipment and surface even if it is owned by the city. Many playgrounds are not very safe for your toddler, so keep them closely supervised.

Breast Milk or Formula For Your New Baby Here Are Some Facts

One critical decision that every new mother must make is whether or not she will feed her baby formula, or opt to breast-feed. This probably seems like an easy decision, for most. But there are a great many women who ultimately struggle with the choice. The media and family members may be putting pressure on the new mom to make the “right” choice, or she may be struggling with the decision to go back to work which always makes breastfeeding difficult.
Studies continue to show that breast milk is better for infants. But there are many reasons parents, specifically mothers, choose to go the formula route. It can be for health reasons or simply a matter of convenience.
It can also be because of feelings of inadequacy, especially for first-time mothers. (These mothers try to breast-feed in the beginning, but soon switch to formula because they feel their baby is not getting enough nourishment.)
It is recommended that mothers who have contracted HIV or hepatitis B, opt only to feed their babies formula. Mothers who are undergoing cancer treatments fall into this category as well. In these situations, it is best to consult a physician before making any final decisions.
Typically, formulas can be grouped into three categories: cow-milk based, soy based and special needs based. (Special need-based formulas are not meant for general use and are usually only doctor recommended.)
Formula made from cow milk, is most common. It accounts for over 75% of all formula sold, in the United States. It has been altered in such a way that makes it much easier to digest. More sugar is added to replace a portion of the fat content.
Quite obviously, soy based formulas are made from soy protein. Generally they are used when an infant has proven to be allergic to cow’s milk.
Formulas can be purchased in three forms. These include: powdered, concentrated and ready to feed (or RTF).
Powdered formula is the least expensive, of the three. It also takes the most time to prepare, but many mothers still find it convenient. This is due to the fact that the powder can be pre-measured into a bottle and stored this way. At feeding time, all that is necessary is the addition of the proper amount of sterilized water. (Usually, one scoop of formula for every 2 ounces of water.)
Concentrated formula is more expensive than powdered, but less costly than ready to feed. This type of formula is usually with sterilized water… 50% formula and 50% water.
It can be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to two days.
Ready to feed formula is ready right out of the can. It is also available in several sizes of disposable bottles… which a very convenient to use when traveling.
Since baby formula is manufactured with certain FDA standards in mind, there’s little difference between one formula and another. Because of this, many mothers deside to purchase store brand formula instead of popular name brands. This can save a considerable amount of money, over time.
Saving Money on Baby

No matter where you look these days, the prices for all kinds of goods seems to be going up. Sometimes the prices on the goods you buy go up, other times the manufacturers try to be more sneaky, and charge the same price but give you less.
One are that has seen very large price increases over the last few years is the price of diapers. Do you remember when a “jumbo” package of diapers was really jumbo? It used to fill up most of your shopping cart for one package. Now, a jumbo package contains as few as 18 diapers! What used to fill your shopping cart could now fit in your diaper bag.
While shopping at the store, I realized that a size 3 diaper now costs about 35 cents each. When you add in the cost of wipes, you find out that for each diaper change you could be spending 50 cents. When your baby gets older and needs larger diapers that cost can spiral up to 75 cents per change. If your baby is like most, you will change them about 8 times a day. At 50 cents per change, even with only 8 changes per day, you are spending $4 per day, and that can add up to $120 per month.
The Diaper Alternative
Now, because of the high costs of diapers, a lot of mothers (and fathers) are looking in to cloth diapers instead of disposable. The cloth diapers available today are nothing like they used to be. Gone are the days of brittle plastic pants that leak, diaper pins that poke your baby, or break off while you are trying to pin them on. Today’s cloth diapers are really amazing. With snap and velcro diapers, changing a cloth diaper is just as easy as changing a disposable diaper.
A premium cloth diaper will cost about $17.95. If you are spending 50 cents per diaper change, that cloth diaper can pay for itself in less than two months, even including washing costs.
Are cloth diapers right for you and your baby?
To switch entirely to cloth diapers, it is recommended that you have two to three dozen cloth diapers. Although that will save you thousands of dollars before your baby is potty trained, that can still be a big commitment if you aren’t sure it will work for you.
We are seeing more and more families who wait to use cloth diapers, but can’t convince themselves to go all the way. Some of these families are taking a try it and see approach. They may buy just a few as a trial, to see if it is right for them. Even if you only replace one disposable diaper a day with cloth, you will save hundreds of dollars!
One mother recently took this approach, just to see if cloth diapers would work for her baby. In less than two months, her small purchase of cloth diapers has already paid for itself, and she is ready to buy even more. She has even learned that her pre-conceptions about cloth diapers being difficult have proved wrong. They have been so easy that she even used them while traveling over the Christmas holiday!
There are great advantages that come from using cloth diapers. Being much more environmentally friendly, and saving a lot of money are two of them, but one of the greatest advantages from a mom’s point of view is how much better your baby looks in them!

Gender Selection Choose The Sex Of Your Baby In 3 Easy Steps

There can be a multitude of reasons why people look into gender selection. To complete their family, medical purposes, just because they want ‘a boy or a girl’ and so on. In some countries now though, ‘just because’ isn’t a good enough reason, and medical gender selection has been banned. So is there another way to select the gender of your next baby? Yes there is!
Although we live in a society where we have freedom of choice, there are of course limits and boundaries that our country’s governments and leading bodies have set out. In some countries where a certain sex has reached considerably more than the other, ruling parties have stepped in and banned medical gender selection. Can you afford to travel to another country to receive this expensive and invasive treatment? Well not many of us could! IVF, PGD, Microsort, The Ericsson method all come at a price, and this is hardly surprising. But could you afford this treatment along with air fare, and hotel expenses? And then at the end of this very trying time, what happens if you don’t even conceive, let alone conceive that little girl or boy that you so desperately wanted. Could you afford to do it all again?
Are there other methods of preconception gender selection?
Natural gender selection is taking the world by storm, and it has an unbelievable success rate. With around 75%-95% of couples ‘really’ getting their dream baby!
So what is natural gender selection all about? How is it possible to conceive a girl, or conceive a boy without a medical team in the same room?
It’s all about preparing your body, and a few other little bits of knowledge!
The PH level of your body can influence the gender of your baby at conception. You must know when you will ovulate, then you can plan the right time to have sex. Learn about sperm! Sounds strange? but altogether fascinating stuff! Believe it or not, the sex of your baby all depends on these little guys, so the more you know the better prepared you can be!
Not only does natural gender selection give you a higher chance of conceiving a baby with the sex of your choice, it also helps to prepare your body for pregnancy.

Functional and Appealing Baby Strollers

Baby strollers are the most often used equipment and one of the most essential for parents to purchase. These are steel or aluminum frames fitted with wheels and fabric harnesses, carriages, and seats. They are of varying sizes and styles, and as the term indicates, they are used for carrying or transporting babies around safely and comfortably.
Varied Designs
Baby strollers come in specific designs. Some are built sturdily, with big all-terrain wheels for when the mother goes out jogging, shopping, or enjoying the outdoors with her baby close to her at all times. Others are lightweight, with emphasis on the type of materials used for the seats and harnesses, which can protect the child effectively against the elements. There are even models built with multiple seats for carrying more than one infant at once. Many of these types are fitted with additional storage compartments for essentials such as diapers, extra clothing, and the like. Specific terms used to refer to these different types are “Jogging,” “Traveler,” “Umbrella,” “Carriage,” and “Convertible” type strollers.
More Benefits
Many baby stroller models double as car seats with a few quick and easy adjustments. This contributes greatly to a more convenient travel. In most cases, these particular types are light enough to be carried into and out of the car with ease. They can weigh as relatively little as 20 pounds. Most strollers of all sizes and designs weigh from less than 15 pounds to 25 pounds or more. More important, these lighter units maintain their durability and sturdiness through constant and prolonged use.
There are also those that have adjustable handles and seats, allowing them to be positioned for maximum comfort for both the baby and the person controlling the stroller. In addition, many other models have replaceable covers and seats, which effectively solve cleanliness issues while giving the equipment flexible options for design, color, patterns, and the like. In other words, not only are baby strollers practical, but they can also be stylish.
Baby strollers vary in prices depending on the type, size, design, kind and availability of accessories, and the number of seats. The particular stroller accessories that may come with a purchase are seat or cover replacements, tote bags, inserts, and paddings. Generally, the price range across all types and models is from less than $80 to more than $800.
While baby strollers are easy enough to find in local retail outlets, it is advisable to shop online where one can take advantage of numerous choices and purchase options such as free shipping, sale or discounted prices (up to 25% or more in some shops) and other special offers. The most prominent sellers are Amazon, AlbeeBaby, Strollers, Babychecklist, and more. The top brands, meanwhile, are Bugaboo, Kelty, Stokke’s, BabyGearExpo, and a few others.
Parents or guardians must provide infants with utmost care while they try to maintain the quality and frequency of other essential or rewarding activities. While keeping this in mind, buying the most suitable baby stroller to carry and transport the child with ease, comfort, and safety definitely qualifies as one of those appropriate methods.
