Who is Looking After your Baby

Once we get over the excitement of knowing a baby is on the way, we have to come down to earth and start making preparations for baby’s arrival. Most of us will have a checklist of to do things such as shopping for baby’s essentials etc. I think that one of the most important aspects of preparation is deciding who is going to look after your newborn baby. What are your options?
Looking after your baby yourself
Some questions you and your husband may have to consider
• Can you make do with one income?
• Can you work part time or work from home?
• Do you have the mindset to spend 24 hours a day with your baby?
• If this is your first baby, do you have any support with caring for your baby? This includes physical, emotional and psychological support as it is not always easy looking after a newborn baby.
If you answer yes to all the questions above than you will make a good stay at home mum. If you cannot answer yes to all the questions or after a few months of staying at home with your baby, you decide that you want to go back to work, than you will have to consider other child care options for your baby. The options for child care facilities are slightly different in Asian countries compared to Western societies
Sending baby to grandma
This may be ideal if grandma lives nearby. However many grandmas live in another town or state which means that you will only get to see your baby once a week at weekends or an even longer period if the distance is too far. I have seen many cases where the baby does not know his parents at age 1 year. If grandma is a bit elderly she may not know how to properly stimulate your baby and there is also the possibility that grandma will spoil your baby. I have children who come to my centre after spending months with grand parents who carry them all day long that they do not know how to sit or crawl at the age of 10 months. They are very clinging and refuse to be left alone except when they are sleeping. If your parents are looking after your baby do make sure that you encourage them to allow your baby to learn normal developmental activities like rolling over, crawling and exploring their environment.
Having a care giver in your home
For many parents this arrangement is very appealing as your baby will be in familiar and comfortable surroundings. You do not have to spend time sending and collecting your baby from an outside caretaker. Your baby gets one on one care and would be exposed to fewer people and germs. Your care giver may do some light housework while your baby naps which would allow you to spend quality time with your baby when you come home. In the past, it was easy to get a local mature lady to live-in as amahs but nowadays it is getting more and more difficult to do this and it is quite expensive to employ local amahs or nannies. Nowadays, many parents in Malaysia and Singapore employ foreign maids to care for their baby. I have a suspicious nature when it comes to leaving newborn babies with foreign maids who may decide to run away leaving your baby at home alone, or worse, taking your baby with her. In addition, most foreign maids do not have any experience in looking after a newborn baby. Do remember that the first 2 years of your baby’s life is eventful as he will be more prone to fever associated with immunizations, teething etc. This is also a time when he is learning a lot and if the maid cannot provide the right stimulation your baby’s development will be slightly slower.
Day care in someone else’s home
Many first-time parents choose this type of care because they believe it’s important for their child to interact with other children as well as at least one adult during the day. Normally, this type of care is provided by housewives (baby sitter) who have had children of their own so they have experience with caring for small children. Some provide a one on one care but the majority will have at least another 3 to 4 children to care for. If you are lucky you may find a fantastic baby sitter who will provide your baby with the best physical and developmental care. I find the vast majority of these baby sitters provide quite good physical care but do not know how to provide adequate stimulation for the baby’s development. Most of the babies end up watching Chinese soap operas all the time. If you send your baby to this type of baby sitters please make sure that you also provide some developmental media for your baby such as educational toys, books with pictures and educational videos so that he learns through music and singing. Some parents will only take the baby home on weekends and I personally disagree with this arrangement as I feel very strongly that you must spend some quality time every night in your own home with your baby. This will help your baby to build trust in you and for you to know everything about your own baby.
A day care center
Choosing the proper day care center for your child should be a carefully thought out and researched process. It is important to choose a center that helps your child grow and develop his skills while also having fun. There are several advantages to having your child in a daycare center. Good centers have a mix of activities that will teach different skills. Activities that lead to creativity, storytelling, dancing and singing all help your baby learn instead of just playing all day. Children also get to socialize and interact with other children which they wouldn’t get to do if they were at home with a nanny.
A few disadvantages are that the children do not have the one-on-one attention they would get if they were at home with a parent or nanny. The children are also more likely to be exposed to more germs from all the other children. The upside of this is that the children start to build their immunity earlier. While centers are usually very structured and have clear rules for parents to follow such as those regarding picking up your child, a disadvantage is that you could incur fees for picking up your child late, having to find a place for your child on holidays, or finding someone to care for your child if he or she becomes sick from a highly contagious illness and is sent home by the center.
As an operator of a child day care centre I recommend that you MUST check out the centre before you send your baby there.
• Check out the centre when there are other children around. This will let you see how the children are looked after and whether they are happy, outgoing or shy and withdrawn and how they respond to the staff members.
• Take your baby to the centre because babies are very sensitive to their environment. If you enter and your baby starts crying then the place is not for your baby. Let your baby spend some time looking around and see how he reacts to the staff members and the environment.
• Check whether it is a safe clean facility. All the areas should be clean, well lit and ventilated. There should be policies on staff hygiene and cleanliness such as hand washing, cleanliness of feeding equipment and disposal of rubbish.
• Does the centre have an open door policy i.e. do they allow unannounced visits? If they do not have this policy, they may be hiding something.
• What is the staff to baby ratio? Newborn babies require extra time compared to bigger children so the ideal ratio is 1 to 3.
• Does the centre have any daily programme to help your baby’s development?
• Any other personal questions of your own.
Whichever option you choose, the most important thing to consider is the safety, wellness and happiness of your baby and the least stress to you the parents

Skin Care Products for your New Baby

As most of you know, a baby’s skin is considerably more sensitive than the average adult. For that reason, it is vitally important that you use natural skin care products for your child. Many skin care products contain chemicals and fragrances that can irritate your new baby’s skin. By knowing which products to avoid, and which products you should use, you can ensure that your little one grows up with healthy beautiful skin.
Weleda Diaper Care Cream is by far one of the best products we have found to date. Weleda was established back in 1921 by physicians and pharmacists under the guidance of Dr. Rudolf Steiner. The main ingredients in their diaper care cream are almond oil, calendula flower, chamomile flower, lanolin, and lavender oil. These ingredients are contained in a base of zinc oxide. This product provides highly effective treatment for painful diaper rash. It is truly one-of-a-kind.
Lavera Baby Toothpaste is yet another excellent product, with absolutely no harmful ingredients. It contains no fluoride, phosphate, or sugar. It is made with all natural silica, which is very effective at cleaning your baby’s new teeth. This toothpaste is also ideal for helping your growing child with learning to brush his or her own teeth, as it is safe to swallow. This product is also certified organic.
Dr. Hauschka’s Sunscreen Spray for Children is an incredible product. It has an SPF of 20, and is ideal for day-to-day use. The wonderful thing about this sunscreen is that it is colored, and allows one to see exactly where it has been applied. It has a pure and natural composition, and is safe for use on all skin types. It is also water resistant, so parents can relax knowing their children have the best sun protection on the beach or in the water. Furthermore, the plant-based nutrients moisturize your little one’s skin while the sun dries it out.
Lavera Baby Shampoo will transform bath time with your baby into an oasis of fun. As with other products from this excellent company, Lavera Baby Shampoo is comprised of all natural ingredients such as organic almond and wheat extract. This tear-free shampoo is perfect for your baby’s sensitive skin, as it helps to maintain the natural moisture balance of your baby’s skin. This gentle, mild-foaming shampoo is perfect for children and adults alike.
Regardless of the products you have chosen to use with your children, it cannot hurt to learn more about the other products that are available on the market. While many companies advertise their products as natural, most of them cannot be considered truly natural. The products mentioned above are just a few of the excellent products we have discovered and had the pleasure to use. We hope you check them out for yourself.

Have You Heard About All the Harmful Chemicals in Everyday Baby Products

Children today face increasing obstacles to healthy development, including rising incidence of premature birth; male genital defects; learning, attention and emotional disturbances; early puberty; obesity; and low sperm quality. A recent report, “Growing Up Toxic” by the Environment California Research and Policy Center, confirmed findings that chemical exposures are the primary cause for increased disabilities and disease. The only good news is that YOU can protect your child from many of these chemicals, armed with knowledge and the commitment to buy smart.
Headlines are screaming about bisphenol A (BPA), a noxious chemical used in many plastic containers including baby bottles, water bottles, sippy cups and other containers used for food and beverages. Much of the recent clamor occurred after publication of a recent study, Baby’s Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles.
The study, commissioned by Environmental Health groups in the U.S. and Canada, has resulted in calls for bans on BPA, an environmental estrogen, since it is known to leach out of the plastics and has been implicated in development and reproductive health risks.
“It’s absolutely obscene to use a substance that can make little boys less masculine and opens the chance that little girls will go on to develop breast cancer,” he said at the teleconference.
The BPA studies call for a ban on the use of BPA following action by the State of California to ban the use of phthalates and other known cancer causing ingredients in products designed for children. Phthalates (pronounced thah-lates) are used to make plastic ’soft’ and is found in toys, for more details visit to www.baby-care-book.com teething rings, some bottles and other play things that children often handle or put into their mouths. The California legislation is leading other states to begin regulation on known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, but the road to success is rocky and very long.
Early 2008, another study found elevated levels of phthalates found in the urine of babies who’d been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with commonly used, commercial baby products. These reports, along with a myriad of other recent studies, are contributing to real concern and outrage on the part of parents across the nation.
When the very products that are designed to encourage good parenting become a threat to good health, it creates worry and distress. It also points to the need for parents to become vigilant consumers who learn to read labels, follow new studies as they are published and begin to demand safe, clean products for their children.
One of the first and most controllable items that a parent can focus on are the skin and body care products they expose their child to each day. And, no, I’m not talking just about the baby care products. I am including all the items adults use to bathe or shower, brush their teeth, plus deodorant, lotion, makeup, for more details visit to www.create-super-baby.com nail polish and products that clean / freshen the home. READ the labels on your product containers and remember that the average American comes into contact with over 200 toxic chemicals just getting ready for work in the morning! If you put it on your own body and then pick up your child to quiet their sobs, it’s safe to assume your child is getting exposed to the same 200 chemicals that you just slathered over your own body.
So, how do you get started?
Just take one step at a time. READ labels and try to limit the number of toxins in each product. I’ve listed the most worrisome below – clip the list and take it with you when you are shopping. Remember that if a product has 5 or 6 ingredients that are on the list – or only 1 ingredient on the list, that should be reason enough to look for a safer product.

Amber teething necklace

As a source of traditional healing that has been passed on through generations, the amber teething necklace stands out as an unparalleled example of alternative medicine with proven health benefits. Comfortable, lightweight, and very beautiful, amber is radiant with energies of peace and calm to those who wear it. Most of the unique and amazing properties of Baltic amber is that it offers a natural, drug-free alternative to the relief of teething pain in children. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal as a natural homeopathic product for babies, children and adults.
We know that amber is the fossilized resin from prehistoric trees that date as far back as 50 million years ago. In nature, the resin would have been used by the tree itself as a natural antibiotic or preservation from infection or injury. Worn for centuries as a natural remedy for pain relief, amber was used to promote fast healing and to boost the body’s own immune system .Amber has been at the center of many scientific studies which clearly indicate that its therapeutic properties are very significant.
Currently, there are two different thoughts as to why wearing amber on the skin can have soothing and calming effects on teething children. One thought suggests that when amber is worn on the skin, the skin’s warmth releases miniscule amounts of healing oils from amber which are then absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. The other theory is based on scientific findings which have shown that amber is electromagnetically alive and produces significant amounts of organic, purely natural energy.
Baltic amber contains anywhere from 3-8% of succinic acid, a scientifically examined medical substance used in contemporary medicine. The highest content of the acid is found in the amber cortex – the external layer of the stone. Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886), the pioneer of modern bacteriology, proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human body. In the 1930’s and 40’s, European biochemists discovered that succinic acid is an amino acid created naturally in every cell of the body capable of aerobic respiration, participating in the citric acid – or Krebs cycle. This is how carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are metabolized into energy.
Wearing amber may also protect us against the negative influences of electrical equipment like computers, televisions, mobile phones and microwave ovens. Even more amazing about amber is that the chemical properties of the resin, when formed, act as a natural embalming agent with both drying and anti-microbial properties. Ancient Egyptians actually used pine resin as an embalming agent, and doctors in the War, lacking anything else, would sometimes slap tree resin on a wound as a disinfectant and saved lives that way.
The amber solution is not new to mothers and others who look for natural healing. Amber products are sold in local pharmacies in many European countries including Switzerland, Germany and Austria where amber has been respected for its medicinal qualities for centuries. Why not give your baby the tender loving care of amber and see for yourself what an amazing gift of nature it is.

How to Choose the Best Teething Rings

Teething rings are often the best remedies you can offer your child during the difficult time of teeth eruption; made of metal, rubber or plastic such items meet the baby’s need to chew something so as to relieve the pressure in the swollen gums. There are certain safety matters to be considered when you have to choose between several types of teething rings.
First of all, the simplest teething rings are also the most reliable; preferably, they should be made of one piece of material alone, so that the risk of part detaching is kept at the minimum. Such precautions are not at all far-fetched since there have been cases when teething rings have been withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer since little design details like hearts or flowers broke and were swallowed by babies.
Between metal, plastic or rubber teething rings, opinions are very often divided; what exactly should one choose? First of all, metal teething rings are usually made of sterling silver; they are considered high class objects with an advanced level of reliability. Silver is a very little reactive metal with virtually no-toxicity, so its structure represents no threat for the health of the child. Moreover, a metal teething ring can be more easily cooled in the fridge for advanced efficiency.
Plastic teething rings have the disadvantage of including all sorts of chemicals in their structure; quality products are perfectly safe, but great care should be taken when buying them. Always check the label of the ring to see exactly what it is made of; there should be some information on the manufacturing process and information on the hypo-allergic nature of the materials used. There should be no sharp edges on which the child may scratch or cut.
Rubber teething rings are the most commonly used: statistics show that rubber rings make top sales when compared to products made of metal or plastic. The great advantage is that rubber is neither too hard nor too soft, which makes it perfect for the chewing tendency of the infant; moreover, since the rings are made of natural rubber, there is no threat risk whatsoever. All you need to be careful about is deterioration since the child will give the ring a pretty harsh treatment.
The price of the teething rings is definitely not an issue since they are basic items that will not cost you too much. Anyway, a good word of advice is to avoid too colorful teething rings, since such an attractive design definitely suggests a large number of chemicals used in the structure. And last but not least, make sure to clean the ring as often as possible, otherwise the baby is exposed to the risk of getting all sorts of infections.

Persistent Cryingbaby Care

Some young babies have prolonged bouts of crying, which typically occur in the late afternoon and evening, and can last any where between two and four hours. Babies often begin this pattern of persistent crying at about three weeks of age, and will usually have grown out of it by about three months. This pattern of crying has become known as colic, because as the baby becomes increasingly upset and difficult to soothe, he may often pull his legs up and arch his back as if experiencing abdominal pain. In fact, it’s probably misleading to give it any special name, because there doesn’t seem to be any known cause for this pattern.
Getting Through It
A baby who is persistently fretful may cry readily at other times, not just in the evening. However, the evening pattern of crying can be a particular strain for parents, especially if one or both of you has been working during the day. It may be that your baby senses and resets to your tiredness at this time. Although this crying pattern may only last three months, this period can seem never ending to new parents who have to deal with their baby’s distress day after day. Trying some of the suggestions for soothing your baby given below and should help you through this difficult time.
Accepting Help From Others
Some times a crying baby can make parents who are already tired from broken nights feel quite desperate this is the time to speck help. Don’t ever feel that you are failing as parents if you accept assistance, countless other parents will have felt as frustrated and exhausted as you because their babies have cried a lot and have been difficult to soothe. Jump at the chance if your baby’s grandparents or other friends or relations offer to care for your baby for a while so you can get out on your own for a couple of hours or enjoy some unbroken sleep. If they don’t offer any help, don’t be afraid to ask them. There’s no need to feel guilty they will be glad to have the chance to relieve you, and it will help you to get things back into perspective. It’s a great help, too, to talk to healthcare or baby care professionals, who are there to support you.
Comforting Your Older Baby
As your baby grows and becomes more aware of her surroundings, her pattern of crying will change because it’s not the only way she can communicate with you now. Her reasons for crying will also be easier for you to both predict and interpret. You’ll begin to distinguish between frustration, hunger, pain, or loneliness. Even when your baby is beginning to become more mobile and independent, the best way to comfort her if she’s unhappy is with your company, hugs, and cuddles.
Security Blankets
Toward their first birthday, many babies will have become attached to a particular comfort item a favorite soft toy, cloth, or blanket that probably helps them sleep and that may be grabbed when they’re feeling a bit insecure and upset. Other babies become attached to a pacifier or suck their thumbs. This is perfectly normal, and there’s no point in distressing your baby by removing the item on the grounds that it is a bad habit, it isn’t. As your baby’s confidence and independence develop after her first birthday, she’ll gradually become less dependent on her security object, although it may take a year or so. It’s a good idea to have some spares in case the main one needs washing.
Teething And Crying
Your baby’s teeth will normally start to come through from about six months, so she’ll dribble a lot and her gums will occasionally be sore. Your baby may become rather grumbly when she’s teething, and it’s usually quite obvious if she’s uncomfortable, she’ll want to chew a lot and may have a hot, red area on her check. However, it isn’t a good idea always to blame persistent crying on teething, when in fact your baby may be bored, or even ill.
Troubleshooting
There are lots of reasons why an older baby may cry.
She’s bored
Your baby may cry from boredom if left alone, unable to hear your voice and with nothing to look at or play with. You are her favorite playmate, so keep her where she can see you and you can talk to her, and don’t leave her for long periods alone in her crib if she’s crying. Some babies do play happily in their cribs for a while after waking, so leave toys and books with in reach.
She’s frustrated
As your baby grows, her desire to do things outstrips her ability to do them, and so she gets frustrated and often starts to cry as a result. She may also cry if you don’t let her have something she wants. Change her toys frequently-her attention span is still short. Find time to play with her.
She’s afraid
At about six months your baby will cry when she’s separated from you, and she’ll be nervous of other people, even when she knows them well. Right from the start, get her used to seeing you leave the room and come back in again. This way she’ll gradually learn that she can trust you always to return to her. Make sure she meets lots of other people before she reaches this stage and learns that even if you leave her with some one else for a while, you always come back.
She’s sick or has hurt herself
If your baby hurts herself, you’ll know at once from her cry, but it may be more difficult to tell when she’s sick, for what you should do if your baby is ill or has an accident.

How to Manage Baby Teething

Although the baby teething process usually starts when the baby is approximately six months old, some may experience it faster or slower than others may. There are various symptoms that a parent should be on the lookout for. The first symptom that can be observed is always the swelling of gum. After this the teeth start erupting in a series, the first eruption starts with the lower incisor, followed by the upper incisor, then the molar and lastly the canines. Even though not all children have the same symptoms, knowing the most common ones will help you deal with any problem.
The general baby teething symptom is among many babies is earache. The babies who experience earache constantly touch their ears. This happens mostly as an indication that the pain has transferred from the gum to the ears. The baby may also start salivating more often. The excess saliva wets the area around the mouth. This should be wiped gently since aggressive action might injure the already sensitive area.
Another indication of teething is that if some objects are placed in front or near the baby, he or she may grab it, place it straight into the mouth, and start chewing. The chewing action observed in babies shows that they need some object to help them to ease the pressure and pain caused by swelling of gum. Another symptom is appearing of rashes in the stomach area. In order to deal with the rashes, apply the bun cream, which will cure them.
The baby may also experience diarrhea. In this case, the best option is to consult a doctor. Increase in body temperature, irritation and not sleeping soundly are other baby teething symptoms that indicate you should take the baby to the doctor right away. To ease the discomforts, use a teeth ring. An extra teeth ring kept in the fridge to cool is also good. Nowadays you can also get teething gums with inflammation function for the baby. These have anesthetic properties that help relief pain.

Teeth Polishing And Flouride In India
Tooth polishing and Fluoride
Dental cleanings involve removing plaque (soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (calculus) deposits that have built up on the teeth over time. Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that we tend to get a build-up of calcium deposits on the teeth. This chalky substance will eventually build up over time, like limescale in a pipe or kettle. Usually it is tooth coloured and can easily be mistaken as part of the teeth, but it also can vary from brown to black in colour….
How are dental cleanings done ?
The dental hygienist or dentist uses specialized instruments to gently remove these deposits without harming the teeth….
Ultrasonic instrument
Commonly used first is an ultrasonic instrument which uses tickling vibrations to knock larger pieces of tartar loose. It also sprays a cooling mist of water while it works to wash away debris and keep the area at a proper temperature….
Fine hand tools
Once the larger pieces of tartar are gone, the dental worker will switch to finer hand tools (called scalers and curettes in dental-speak) to remove smaller deposits and smoothen the tooth surfaces….
Polishing
Once all the surfaces are smooth, the dental worker may polish your teeth. Polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Prophylaxis (short for prophy) paste – a special gritty toothpaste-like material – is scooped up like ice cream into the cup and spun around on the teeth to make them shiny smooth….
Fluoride
Your dentist may also apply fluoride. Fluoride foam or gel is then placed into small, flexible foam trays and placed over the teeth for 30 seconds. Afterwards the patient is directed to spit as much out as possible into a saliva ejector. The fluoride helps to strengthen the teeth since the acids from bacteria in dental tartar and plaque will have weakened the surfaces…..
The Procedure
In-office fluoride treatments contain a higher concentration of fluoride than fluoride-containing products found in stores, and are chemically different; thus allowing the fluoride to stay on the teeth longer. Both children and adults can receive in-office fluoride treatments.
The different types of topically applied fluoride are, acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) which is acidic as the name implies, and neutral sodium fluoride. People with xerostomia or have white tooth coloured fillings, bonding, veneers, or crowns and bridges, receive neutral sodium fluoride…..
The hazards of Fluoride
There is no doubt that the use of fluoride decreases dental caries. But it is also a fact that the ingestion of too much fluoride can result in fluorosis. You should know the associated hazards of fluoride. Fluoride is an acute toxin…..

Relief for Teething Babies

It can be hard for parents to look at teething babies, especially those who go through a lot of pain. Fortunately, not all parents have to go through with this: some babies do not experience much pain during teething episodes. Some parents even claim that they just suddenly see their little one sporting a new tooth, without prior warning. For the worried parents whose little tots do go through the fussy and painful stage, however, there are some prescribed sources of relief.
Something to Bite On
A teether is definitely something to bite on. However, some pediatricians choose to shy away from it. For those who do recommend a teether, they prefer the soft jelly-like teethers that contain water. When cooled, the teether can bring some relief to baby’s aching gums. A clean finger from mom or dad and a blanket can serve as teether substitutes.
Teething Gel
You may also buy a teething gel, which usually comes in flavors that your baby will enjoy. This gel is used to numb the area where the tooth is about to erupt. As a guide, you can ask your pediatrician for a diagram of the order in which every tooth erupts. The first few teeth are the four front ones, with the two lower front teeth coming out first.
“Comfort Foods”
Another way to relieve teething pain is to let your little one bite onto biscuits made especially for those painful gums. He can hold onto the biscuit himself. It is self-feeding practice and teething relief rolled into one. A frozen banana, on the other hand, can be messy but effective in comforting teething babies.

Coping With Infant Teething Problem

Teething is a normal process by which an infant begins to cut the first teeth (primary dentition). The relationship between the eruption of the deciduous teeth and the general health of infants has been documented for over 5,000 years. Various physical disturbances (anything from minor upsets to potentially fatal illnesses) have historically been applied to teething. It is now accepted that the localized symptoms of teething vary between individuals.
On average, infants begin teething at six months and by the age of three years all the first teeth have erupted. A variety of symptoms reported in medical literatures. They include:
• Decreased appetite for solid foods;
• Biting, drooling, ear-rubbing, ear-pulling, and gum-rubbing;
• Irritability (crying);
• Coughing
• Rash on face;
• Sucking;
• Inflamed gums and red cheeks;
• Feeding problems;
• Abnormal temperature (defined as being greater than a child’s own mean temperature plus 1 standard deviation or fevers greater than 102°F);
• Wakefulness (sleep disturbance);
• Smelly urine
• Congestion;
• Convulsions; and
• Stool looseness
There is no evidence that teething was associated with any severe, health-threatening conditions. Thus, before charging any signs or symptoms of a potentially serious illness to teething, doctors and parents must rule out other possible causes. Severe systemic upsets are unrelated to teething and, if present, the infant should be promptly referred to a physician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In addition, most healthcare professionals believe that teething predisposes to infections, most commonly colds and ear infections.
All of these symptoms result in a distressed child and anxious parents. Professionals in all groups believed that parents experience as much (or more) distress as the infants themselves. However, “teething” continues to be a confusing illness that is often misdiagnosed by both healthcare professionals and lay people.
The treatment modalities used in teething have been diverse throughout the ages, frequently depending on the beliefs of the medical profession and laypeople. The modern principles for managing teething involve pain relief and supportive measures.
Some teething symptoms can be eased effectively at home with teething aids such as cold teething rings. Over-the-counter treatments are available. Pain relief is provided mainly in the form of analgesic (Tylenol) and anaesthetic gels (for examples: oragel, Paracetamol, and teething gels). Some of these topical gels also have antiseptic properties. Moreover, gels such as those containing choline salicylate can be applied direct to the gums specifically to relieve pain and inflammation. Some medical professionals also recommend antibiotics or naturopathic medications. The “alternative” therapies, although they are not well documented in the medical literature, are also helpful.
