What To Know About Teeth and How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Teeth are essential to a person’s general health, life, and well-being. We need our teeth in order for our bodies to receive the correct amount of nourishment, that our bodies require for survival. Our teeth help to grind, cut and tear the food we eat. Teeth break down the food into smaller pieces to make it more easily digestible. Proper digestion helps the body use the food correctly for proper growth. Teeth also help in defining the way people talk and how they pronounce words. The shape and appearance of a person’s face is defined by their teeth.
Enamel, which is the outer section of teeth, is the hardest part of teeth. The second section, called dentin is located inside this enamel. The dentin consists of tubes that are hollow, which consist of blood vessels that keep teeth alive, nerves that provide feeling of pain and sensation, and flesh. If you feel pain, this is a warning of something being wrong with your teeth. For instance, an opening in the dentin will allow germs and cold substances inside, which will cause tooth decay. Tooth decay is also known as a cavity. Each person’s teeth contains another section called roots which keeps our teeth anchored in our mouth.
Each person will have two different sets of teeth during their lifetime. The first set is called baby teeth, which consists of twenty teeth. The second set is called permanent teeth, which consists of thirty two teeth. At birth, babies are born with no teeth, and they start growing their baby teeth at about 6 months old. They will grow all 20 baby teeth usually by the age of 2 ½ , and begin losing these baby teeth between the ages of 5 and 6 years old.
Our teeth have different names and uses. Incisors are our front teeth. They contain dull knife blade like edges that we use to cut up our food. Cuspids, also known as canines, are made with a long sharp point with which we tear our food. Bicuspids
Are made with two sharp points with which we grind our food. Molars, sometimes called grinding teeth, are our largest teeth, and we use them for grinding and chewing our food. Our teeth also come in three general shapes which are oval, square, and triangle.
Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases of every human being. There are many ways to prevent tooth decay and protect your teeth. Here are some things you should do, to ensure your teeth stay healthy and to avoid cavities.
1. Visit your dentist regularly.
2. Have your teeth cleaned once a year.
3. Eat healthy foods.
4. Eat foods that contain calcium.
5. Don’t eat too many sweets.
6. Don’t eat too many acidic foods.
7. Chew your food well.
8. Brush after every meal.
9. Floss your teeth.
10. Rinse daily with germ fighting mouthwash.

A Guide to Baby Teething Rings

Teething can be stressful for you and your baby. As your baby’s teeth pushes against and out of his or her gums, the pressure that results can sometimes be painful. What results is a baby trying to put various objects in his or her mouth in an attempt to relieve the pressure. This is where baby teething rings come in.
A teething ring can be made out of metal, plastic, or rubber. It’s basically a chew toy for your infant, especially made for the purpose of teething alone. When your baby undergoes this “rite of passage”, this can provide the greatest possible relief. You can tell when teething is starting when he or she begins to gnaw at pretty much anything – including you. Loss of appetite is also a telltale sign as chewing can be troublesome. Once you notice these behaviors, it’s time to go shopping for a baby teething ring.
The advantage of a metal teething ring is that it’s quicker to chill in the refrigerator. These can be most soothing to the baby’s gums. Metal is also virtually unbreakable – meaning it’s less likely that Junior would chew it to pieces. Plastic teething rings come with the most variety in terms of color and design. On the other hand, the paint used to color plastic could sometimes contain harmful chemicals such as lead. Make sure that what you’re giving your child is safe to put in his or her mouth. Rubber teething rings are safer than plastic and less likely to contain chemicals. These are the most commonly used because they’re neither hard nor soft. However, any signs of deterioration should be enough for you to throw it out. Many teething rings have bumps or ridges that allow for a more “thorough” chewing.
A good rule of thumb for deciding which baby teething ring to buy is its simplicity. The simpler the teething ring, the better. Bells and whistles attached are at risk of falling apart, and worse, being ingested by your baby.
Once you’ve made your purchase, it’s important that you take some necessary precautions to keep it safe. Always wash rings after use to avoid getting contaminated by germs or bacteria. Never boil your rings as they may affect the chemical composition it’s made up of, possibly poisoning your child. Don’t freeze them either – extremely low temperatures can lead to breakage the next time your baby gnaws at it. If your ring holds water, always check for any leakages and throw it away if it does. Never tie rings around a baby’s neck as it may cause strangulation. And finally, it is not a good idea to share your child’s baby teething ring with others as much as it’s unhygienic to share a toothbrush.
Baby teething rings can give both you and your child some relief. Just make sure you follow the guidelines listed in this article and you’ll be well on your way to alleviating some of the pain that is expected to come along during your baby’s teething period.

DentistOrthodontist Wellness Of Teeth And Overall Health Habits

Orthodontist Dentist; Wellness of teeth and overall health habits

Tooth Habits
There are many habits that individuals have which can affect the overall health and wellness of their teeth. In some cases, orthodontic intervention may be necessary. It’s important for patients to listen to dentist and orthodontic recommendations in order to avoid further damage to their teeth and jaw bone.
Tooth Grinding
Patients who grind their teeth typically do so as a stress-related behavior. They do it during the waking hours and at night during sleep. These patients often describe a sore jaw or a headache upon waking up in the morning. Tooth grinding and tooth clenching go hand in hand. It may be a subconscious habit, which the patient may not even be aware that he or she is doing. Some experts believe that tooth grinding is due to sleep deprivation.
Teeth grinding is very noisy and may be disturbing to someone’s sleeping partner. Kids sometimes grind their teeth when they are shedding their baby teeth. A dental professional or orthodontist will be able to see that someone is grinding their teeth by the wear and tear on the teeth.
Such tooth grinding and jaw clenching habits are referred to as parafunctional habits when the grinding or clenching is beyond the normal habit. This occurs when the habit becomes more frequent or excessive. When an individual grits his or her teeth for a prolonged period of time, this type of habit is referred to as a tooth to tooth habit. Parafunction habits can manifest as tooth to soft tissue habits as well. An example of a tooth to soft tissue habit is thumb sucking, abnormal tongue posture habits or nail or foreign object biting.
Sucking on Your Thumb
Thumb sucking interferes with the positioning of the upper and lower teeth. It can cause the upper teeth to splay out and the lower teeth to fold inward. It may also cause open bite of the front teeth when the teeth are closed together. An orthodontic treatment can treat these issues. Sometimes, surgical repositioning of the upper and lower jaw relationships may be necessary as a form of treatment.
Overzealous Brushing
This is a potential cause of gum recession as well as loss of supporting bone around the teeth. Excessive scrubbing of the teeth, which can include brushing vigorously from side to side or up and down, might be compared to a jackhammer on full power.
Brushing too vigorously can cause the bristles of the toothbrush to drive the gums away from the tooth, eventually leading to exposed root surfaces. When this occurs, it can cause tooth sensitivity to cold and to touch.
The correct brushing method includes gently brushing the teeth and gums, yet effectively cleaning the teeth. An electric toothbrush is often recommended because they provide the correct amount of pressure to effectively clean the teeth and keep the gums healthy.
Biting and Chewing on Hard Ice
This is a very common habit and is bad for teeth. This type of habit causes a tremendous amount of stress on the bite. Ice is notorious for carving and breaking away rock and other mountains, so it’s easy to understand why it would be so hard on the teeth.
Chewing on hard ice typically will lead to tooth pain, cracking, fracture and in some cases, may lead to total breakage of a tooth to the point where it cannot be repaired. That being said, people should avoid chewing on ice at all costs. If someone needs to chew hard ice for some reason, they should make sure that it is crushed and slushy.
Holding Hard Objects between the Front Teeth
Individuals who hold hard objects between their front teeth, such as pens, pencils and other hard objects are also causing damage to their teeth. The damage that this action causes is similar to the damage, which is done when an individual chews hard ice.
Teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure and force. Beyond that distinguished amount, the teeth become damaged. Professionals typically recommend holding the teeth apart and lips together as often as possible. This will help individuals to avoid unnecessary placement of hard objects between the teeth.
Sucking on Lemons
Sucking on lemons is sometimes suggested for the purpose of teeth whitening, however, this is a very bad habit for someone to get into. When done regularly, the citric acid from the lemons is extremely strong and can withdraw minerals from the teeth, which will erode the tooth’s surface.
Chronic sensitivity to cold food and drinks, a chalky and worn look to the tooth enamel, weakening of the teeth, such as chipping and cracking and a greater tooth decay caused by loss of protective enamel can be side effects of sucking on lemons.
There is a rumor that drinking citric fruit or eating a lot of citrus fruits is damaging to the teeth, but this is not necessarily accurate. As long as these types of fruit drinks and fruit are not held in the mouth for too long, they don’t typically cause damage. Five Simple and Inexpensive Baby Shower Gift Ideas

A baby shower is an exciting event for a new mom where she and the new baby are the center of attention. Even if you are not attending the baby shower (for example if you are a male family member or friend) it is still a good idea to pick up at least a small gift for the baby.
The new mom may have made a list of some general things that the baby will need, and if she has a list like this, you can check it out. However, frequently you will have to pick a gift without a list. So here are some pretty ’safe bets’ as far as baby shower gifts go. I got a few of these gift ideas when I was in a Target store looking for a gift. I asked several parents who had babies with them in their shopping cart what sort of gifts would be good for a new baby and here are some of the answers that I got.
These baby gift ideas are very easy to find and very reasonable at a store like Target. For $50 you can get a whole assortment of goodies.
1. Clothing: All babies need clothing, and they grow very fast! If you have ever shopped for baby clothes you may be amazed to see that there are several different sizes of clothes needed for the baby just during the first year!
There is 0-1 month, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months and on and on! Therefore, there are plenty of types of clothing that will be needed in plenty of different sizes. Just remember to keep in mind how old the baby currently is, because baby clothing sizes change rapidly, and you would not want to buy a gift that is already too small by the time you present it to the parents!
2. Teething toys: All babies ‘teeth’ and will need little chew toys of sorts. These may become dirty quickly and it is probably smart to replace them often, so a number of these teething toys may be useful. You might find ones with rattles or bells. Just make sure it is not big enough for a baby to swallow.
3. Stuffed animals: A cute stuffed animal may make a nice gift. The softest kind available may be liked the most for snuggly comfort. Additionally, some of these stuffed animals may have sounds built in. You may want one that makes sounds, or you may want an old fashioned one without noise. A good example is Winnie-The-Pooh or Eyeore.
4. Diapers: Parents always need diapers and they are a very practical and useful gift. Just remember to look at the sizes correctly, considering how many months old the baby is. You also might find out what type of diapers the parent prefers to use.
5. Baby books: It is great to read to young children and really helps there little minds grow. While a very young baby won’t be able to understand stories yet, parents are always looking to build a nice little library of quality books to read to their children.
There you have 5 simple baby shower gift ideas! Hopefully you will be able to find a nice gift or even a shopping bag full of little gifts to bring the baby and the parents enjoyment.

How will you stay away your healthy teeth from Gum diseases

Dental care is extremely significant to maintain your mouth healthy because your gums and teeth are directly in bond to your blood streams. Infection here will pass through throughout your blood vessels and create all kind of harms for you. Dental care is very essential for all age’s people. Most tooth decay and gums disease can be prevent by means of good care to teeth and gums. Dentistry plays a key role in dental care. Regular visits to the dentist can be the solution of perfect oral health. Visit your dentist for regular care – mostly cleaning – at least twice a year. Your dentist can wipe out hardened plaque and every tartar that you are not receiving to with brushing or flossing. This is essential to keep your teeth as well as oral health in good condition and stay away from decays and oral disease. Dental care can increase overall health of body.
Dental care is a necessity for healthy gums, safety of dental work, and reducing the threat of gum disease from specific health issues. One of the most common ailments treated by dentist is periodontal or gum disease. Periodontitis is more severe than gingivitis and affects the gums, the adjacent bone (causing bone loss), and the supportive structures of the teeth. It starts out with the creation of plaque, a sticky bacterial film that forms in the mouth at the gum line. If plaque is not removing very every 24 to 48 hours, it hardens into tartar on top of and under the gum line. This make up causes the gums to turn into red and swollen, a situation known as gingivitis. If gingivitis is untreated, it can lead to highly developed gum diseases. Red inflamed gums will begin to recede as the infection travels down into the root of the tooth and the jawbone.
The gum infection hazard is a common problem and strikes hundreds of thousands of populace every year. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the threat. Gum disease is common, but if you do not have any symptoms, yet it is possible to keep away from raising this harmful situation. Some of the symptoms you should look out for are bleeding gums, sore and sensitive gums, and mild bad breath. In order to prevent these brush and floss your teeth regularly at least twice a day, better yet after each meal or snack based on the assistance of your dentist. This will help prevent acid attack to your teeth and help avoid plaque formation. Food particles left between your teeth will break down and turn into acidic. Food does not contain to be sugary or sweet to cause a cavity. Gum disease can reach an advanced and serious stage before you feel any pain or notice any bleeding during brushing.
Dental care is required during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, be certain to notify your dentist before he starts any work on you. Dental care is critical not only for the developing baby, but for mom’s teeth and gums as well. Pregnancy can affect dental health in a variety of ways including increased gum sensitivity and tooth decay. To escape plaque build up it is important to clean thoroughly your teeth and gums twice a day. If you escape proper dental cares, these can leads to more critical problems such as pregnancy gingivitis or tumors. These situations happen most a lot in the first trimester of pregnancy and are cause by an increase in certain hormones. Such hormonal increases can lead to red, irritated, or swollen gums. If your gums are swollen prior to pregnancy, you are at a greater risk to have pregnancy gingivitis. Serious gum disease (periodontal disease) is tie to premature birth and low birth weight. Researchers believe that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease go into the bloodstream through the mouth and travel to the uterus, where they activate the production of prostaglandins, which may cause premature labor. If a baby is born too soon, it cannot reach its full possible weight.
Dental care is necessary for children and adults. Dentists tell that teeth and gum care should commence even before the first baby tooth appears. It is essential to keep baby teeth clean and healthy because, Baby teeth hold spaces open for the permanent teeth to come in. They help form the shape of the child’s face.
Dental care is necessary to eliminate diseased teeth and gums, which contributes to bad breath. Attempt to brush after eating and drinking. Thorough brushing twice a day and flossing once a day will keep plaque away by removing bacteria, saliva and remnants of food that can cause decay.

Oral Hygiene For Babies

Caring for a baby is a lot of work. Diaper changes, feedings and odd sleep patterns can leave even the most organized parents exhausted and absentminded. Amid the multitude of new things parents must learn about taking care of their new baby is oral hygiene. Most dentists and pediatricians agree that parents should make dental care a priority, even during the first months of a baby’s life. By starting good oral hygiene practices early, parents will be training their children to continue these beneficial routines into their adult years.
Oral Hygiene for Babies with No Teeth
Everyone has harmful bacteria in their mouths, even babies. Parents can help eliminate some of these bacteria by gently swabbing the baby’s gums with a wet cloth after feedings. This will not hurt the baby’s gums; rather, he will probably enjoy the sensation.
Oral Hygiene for Teething Babies
Babies begin the teething process when the teeth begin to pierce through the gum line. Once the baby teeth begin to show, parents should start gently brushing all areas of the teeth and gums with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush two times each day.
Babies and Fluoride
When babies are small there is no need to use toothpaste, water will do. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children age 2 and younger use fluoride-free toothpaste. Using fluoride toothpaste before a child has learned to adequately spit it out after brushing can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis.
Dental fluorosis is a permanent condition that occurs when a child is exposed to an overabundance of fluoride during the tooth enamel forming years. The result is either baby teeth or adult teeth that have mild to severe tooth discoloration, such as lines or spots, or irregularities on the surface of the teeth, such as pits.
Babies and Dentist Visits
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children be scheduled for a first dentist visit by the time they turn 1 year of age or when the first tooth comes in. Some dentists begin actual dental exams and cleanings on children when they turn 3 years of age.
Prior to and in-between dental visits, pediatricians check the teeth and gums of their young patients during well-visits. If there are visible problems or if the doctor or parents have concerns about the state of the child’s dental health, it may be recommended that the parents schedule a more in-depth examination by a pediatric dentist or family dentist. Such situations might include:
Injury to the teeth
Tooth discoloration
Tooth sensitivity
Atypical growths in the mouth
Effect of Baby Bottles and Pacifiers on Teeth
Babies should never be given bottles of milk or juice as a way to fall asleep or as a “security” item that is used throughout the day. Allowing babies and children to continually have these types of liquids on the teeth for prolonged periods can easily lead to tooth decay. Baby bottles should be discouraged around the child’s first birthday.
Pacifiers, when continually used after age 3, can create a bad bite or misaligned teeth. It is advisable to stop the pacifier and thumb sucking habit as soon as possible to alleviate these potential problems.
If you are a new parent living in the Studio City, California area and want to learn more about starting a good oral hygiene program for your baby, please visit the website of Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands at Smiles by Sands family dentistry.

Baby Care To Be Considerate Of Babies

Baby care is an indispensable part in the life. Parents should learn something in heart to take good care of their children. And the first one they should know is to be as considerate as possible.
Always, babies or infants are so weak that parents have to be considerate to avoid any neglects that are dangerous to the kids. Then, what should parents do to look after babies well?
1 Sleeping
Sleeping issues are of great significance when it comes to newborns. It takes a lot of commitment in taking care of baby, including the sleeping positions of the baby, how long they sleep and how often they sleep. Enough sleeping is one of the basic condition for a baby’s growing up.
2 Eating
As a newborn, the baby spends most of his/her time in sleeping and eating. Whenever he/she wakes up, he/she is apt to cry for drinking milk or eating something fluid. Be considerate of the babies so that you can know when they are hungry and when they don’t want to eat at all.
3 Bathing
If you are considerate enough, you should pay your attention to the bath time of the baby very carefully. You should learn how to bath the baby and what to do for your baby during bath time. Remember that infant is much weaker than children or adults, so make sure that the temperature is warm enough when bathing the baby.
4 Comforting
Babies, in fact, are quite difficult to comfort. But if you fail to comfort the infants, they will cry loudly to make you bored and unhappy. There are many aspects you should take into consideration when comforting the babies, such as the burping babies, teething of babies, equipments use for feeding babies, and so on. Additionally, you should focus on the hunger, tiredness, pains or some common illness of the baby if you hope the baby to live a comfortable life.
All in all, it is not easy to take care of a baby. Just learn to be considerate and patient as well. Only if you have been considerate enough, you are able to look after a baby.

How To Survive The Puppy Teething Stage

Anyone who’s raised a pup knows that puppy teething can be a problem. Anyone who’s raised a Lab pup knows that puppy teething can be tantamount to a chainsaw massacre! So why do dogs chew with such vigor and wanton disregard for our hard-earned possessions?
A puppy’s dental timeline starts with 0 teeth at birth, has 28 baby teeth by 8 weeks, and by 7 months all 42 of his permanent teeth will be in. During that transition period when the adult teeth are pushing the little ones out of their way there’s some discomfort to the dog. And chewing on something makes the hurt lessen. Puppies also chew to relieve boredom and to explore a brave new world that they’re eager to learn all about.
While puppy teething will eventually subside, a dog’s urge to chew never goes away entirely. (Just this morning I watched 14-yeaar-old Karl trying to decimate a fuzzy dog toy with a squeaky thing in it.) Consequently, it’s a good idea to provide your dog with things other than shoes, books, furniture and shrubs (ask a Lab owner) to munch on. Good choices include rope toys, hard rubber balls and rubber bones and crumbly rawhide chews (stay away from the leathery ones!)
During the puppy teething period try giving your pup a rope toy that you’ve gotten wet and frozen. And be sure to rotate the toys; puppies get bored easily. If you catch Puppy chewing on the TV remote or your house slipper remove what’s left of your stuff and give him a good, firm “No!” before replacing it with one of his doggy toys.
Remember; the best defense against puppy teething is a good, proactive offense. Keep your things out of harm’s way and have plenty of dog toys at hand. And when you think you can’t stand another chewed-up shoe, just remember all the poop you’ve had to clean up!
Jerry Grinkmeyer has been successfully training (and being trained by!) his own dogs for over 30 years. “I believe over the years I’ve learned more from dogs than I’ve taught them.”
